In 2009 we reported that Crusaid had already put the money raised by all our supporters to good use and have started work on establishing a new Point of Light in the Katete District of Zambia, which become a place where children and local communities can find support, nourishment, education and a bright future. The money raised by The Wig Party in 2008 not only made getting the building possible - it also paid for a complete refurbishment AND funded the programmes outlined below for the next two years; hopefully in the future the centre will become self-funding.
It didn't look like much in 2009 but we were thrilled to have secured the lease on a sturdy building in which we hoped to house such services as a family creche, literacy classes, counselling, social work, youth groups, prevention groups and such basics as meal provision and a food garden.
Negotiations were being undertaken and paperwork filed with the Zambian Government. The pictures on the right shows how things looked in early 2009.
The first step in establishing a new Point of Light in Zambia was to prepare a report which was used to approach the government commissioners in the district and in identifying a suitable site. Your funding was critical; ensuring that the Point of Light was built on solid (and legal) foundations.
The NZP (Network of Zambians living with HIV) is fully committed to the project and good relations were developed with the local educational, medical and community services which were all essential to ensuring that the people who needed our help had access to the services.
In 2009 a church which shared the land Crusaid had identified, gave permission for the use of utilities including water, power and communications which was a great step forward. The money raised enabled a Zambian translator to work with the programmes team to try and push through some of the practical barriers caused by language issues.
All this was made possible by your support … thank you.
